How to Figure Out Tip Amounts

    • 1). Look for suggested gratuity guidelines provided by the business establishment. Some restaurants will actually print a recommended tip amount at the bottom of your bill. Consider these amounts only as suggestions to calculate your tipping amount.

    • 2). Calculate the tip amount in your head or with a calculator on your phone. One way to do it is by simply multiplying your total bill by 0.15. This would give you the exact 15 percent tip amount. If you'd like to tip more or less than 15 percent, adjust the multiple accordingly.

    • 3). Use an easier calculation if you want to just figure out the right amount in your head. Take the total bill amount and move the decimal one digit to the left. This gives you a 10 percent tip exactly. Multiply that number by two for a 20 percent tip, or divide it in half and add that number to the 10 percent amount for a 15 percent tip.

    • 4). Simplify the entire process by carrying around a tipping rate card. Instead of having to calculate every meal you pay for, just refer to the card. Most cards will list amounts for 10 percent, 15 percent and 20 percent tip amounts.
