Surprise for Fan Nancy

When Tom Cruise first came on stage, Oprah showed one of Tom's favorite past moments - when Oprah surprised Nancy in 2001 with a trip to Chicago to meet Tom, in her bathrobe! This past April, Oprah surprised Nancy again with news that Tom would be returning to Chicago and she would be coming as well. Nancy was shown sitting in the audience and Tom gave her an added surprise with a gift of flowers and a framed picture of their last meeting.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Risky Business 1983:

Back up on stage, Oprah asked Tom about his first starring role in Risky Business in 1983. Tom was 19 when he played the role - the clip of the famous underwear scene was shown. Tom described how he made up the dance in the popular scene. The director wanted Tom to be center screen, so Tom tried jumping into the screen, sliding with his bare feet, nothing worked. So he waxed the floor and put on a pair of socks, and the rest is Hollywood history. The director of Risky Business first saw Tom in Taps in 1981 and didn't think he was capable of the role, but Tom proved him wrong.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - The Smith's and Top Gun:

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith sent a message to Tom thanking him for his friendship and congratulating him on his success. The couple shared that as great as Tom's career is, it will never compare to the person he is. Tom shared that Will and Jada are friends he could call at 3am if necessary - they are great friends and real, true people.

The clip from Top Gun in 1986 where the guys sang "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was shown and Tom shared that his favorite part of the film was flying the F14s and riding the motorcycles. As a child Tom said he always wanted to be a pilot.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Jerry Maguire and Renee Zellweger:

A clip from Jerry Maguire 1996 was shown where Tom's character is in the locker room saying "help me help you" to Cuba Gooding Jr's character. Working with Cuba and Renee as well as doing the telephone scene where he yells "show me the money!" were Tom's favorite parts about making the film.

Renee Zellweger sent a message for Tom sharing that she loves his heartfelt laugh and about how there is a magic about him, something special. Tom described working with Renee as lovely and that she has a charm and is a genuine person.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Nerves and The Beckham's:

Oprah asked Tom if there are things that he gets nervous about, he said a few but didn't elaborate. Tom stated that he gets excited making movies and that there are only a few places that he really knows that he belongs, and a movie set is one of them. Wanting to be great and entertain the audience are what drives Tom to success. Tom truly loves every aspect of movie making, even the behind the scenes.

David and Victoria Beckham sent a message for Tom thanking him for his friendship and commenting on their favorite movies. David loved Tom in The Last Samurai while Victoria liked Top Gun.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Stunts and Jamie Foxx:

The clip from Mission Impossible 2 was shown where Tom is hanging from the cliff in the opening scene. The shoot took 4 days to complete and Tom did all of the stunts himself, wanting to give the audience a thrill.

Jamie Foxx's message to Tom was shown next and he pointed out Tom's performance in Born on the Fourth of July which was Tom's first Oscar Nomination. Tom and Jamie starred together in Collateral and Jamie commented that Tom really stays true to himself.

Tom shared that people thought Born would ruin his career, but that he wanted to challenge to see if he could dig that deep into a character.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Dustin Hoffman, A Few Good Men, Dakota Fanning:

In Dustin Hoffman's message to Tom, he described a phone booth scene in Rainman 1988 where he farted and Tom worked it into the film. Dustin stated that it is his favorite moment of all of his acting work. As a joke, Dustin teased about missing Tom and having lunch with a cardboard cutout of him.

A clip from A Few Good Men 1992 was shown where Jack Nicholson says "you can't handle the truth" - Tom commented that working with Jack "was cool" and he even did an impression.

Dakota Fanning also sent a message to Tom saying that she loved how he bumps fists with everyone from extras to Stephen Spielberg.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Film Crew, Actors, Stephen Spielberg:

Oprah asked about Tom interacting with the crew, and he said that he wants a team spirit and fun. Tom enjoys taking care of people and feels that everyone is experiencing the film together.

When asked what actors he would like to work with, Tom shared that there are many. Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are 2 great actors that Tom would love to work with.

Stephen Spielberg also sent a message to Tom saying that he knew Tom was a movie star in waiting early on. Stephen loved Tom in Magnolia 1999 and felt he went the deepest into that character. Stephen wanted to work with Tom and has had the opportunity twice.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Viewer Questions:

A viewer asked Tom how he would spend a free day with his family and Tom explained that their life is full of lots of activity. Tom mentioned taking a flight, a picnic, going to the beach, playing games, riding motorcycles, going on a hike, having dinner or watching movies.

Another viewer asked if Tom still had dreams to accomplish and Tom stated that he has not reached all of his dreams. Tom shared that he feels privileged to do what he does and thanks viewers for letting him entertain, saying his life is way bigger than his dreams, but his dreams keep changing with new challenges in his life.

Tom Cruise 25 Years - Audience Gift:

To end the celebration of Tom's career, Oprah surprised the audience with a box set of every movie that Tom has starred in since Risky Business in 1983 - 25 movies in all. Nancy was also able to head on stage for Tom to sign her box of films.
