High-Impact Interview Questions
- You will likely be asked by an interviewer what you could deliver once you're settled in a new position. In some high-pressure jobs, such as corporate positions, you don't have much time to get your feet wet before senior managers will expect you to produce results. If you're a candidate for a management job, be prepared to talk about how you will bring growth in terms of the people you manage or the individual results you achieve.
(Note: The question is a variation of advice found on page 99 in reference 1) - Be prepared to show how you can adapt your work habits to the expectations of a new employer. For example, an interviewer might ask you to describe your problem-solving approach. Describe a method widely used in your industry -- but only if you have actually used that model. Be honest -- if you don't have information to share on a particular subject, it's best to note that and move on to the next question.
- High-achievers exhibit common behaviors based on their job type. For example, high-volume salespeople are able to give a strong sales pitch throughout the week -- they don't have time to feel ambivalent about selling. You will likely be asked to describe a behavior essential to the job you're seeking. Write a list of behaviors referred to in the job posting and others you think are relevant. Practice talking about your own attributes and how they fit the job.
- This is an example of a scenario-based question you might be asked. An employer wants to gauge how you will respond to different scenarios, such as how to handle an angry customer. This question demands a careful response, because it reflects on your professionalism. Consider different scenarios that are likely in the job you're applying for. Prepare to impress an interviewer with your consideration of those scenarios, your subject-matter knowledge and your creativity. You might also need to describe interpersonal skills in some questions.
