How to Plant Roses in Autumn
- 1). Select a site where the roses will get at least four to six hours of sun a day. Try to put the roses in a location where they will get full sun in the morning and some shade later in the afternoon. Choose an open area that has excellent air circulation. Avoid putting the roses near fruit trees or a vegetable garden. This may exacerbate any problems with pests and diseases.
- 2). Dig a hole large enough for the roots to fit in comfortably. Make the hole 1 1/2 times as wide as it is deep. Drop a handful of bonemeal into the hole. Thoroughly mix the soil removed from the hole with compost or peat moss.
- 3). Prune any broken roots from the plant. Place the plant in the hole. Ensure that the roots fit comfortably within the hole. Shovel the soil and peat mixture into the hole, stopping 2 inches before the top. Thoroughly water the soil and let the water drain. Finish adding the final 2 inches of soil. Ensure that the bud union is about 1 inch under the soil. Tamp down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
