Diabetes Mellitus is a life-long illness that is complicated and multifaceted. It is a condition characterized by the body's inability to deal with insulin correctly, whether it be by resistance or by deficiency. There are three main types of diabetes, each with its own unique treatments and triggers. Type 1 diabetes, formerly known as juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus, is the type of diabetes where the pancreas produces no insulin at all. This type of diabetes must be treated and controlled with medical diabetes treatments, usually in forms of injections of insulin, to keep the diabetic healthy.

Type 2 diabetes is different. In this condition, insulin is present in the blood, but the body is resistant to it. The body is unable to process or respond to it normally. This type of diabetes is most commonly referred to as adult-onset diabetes mellitus, but it can develop at any time in someone's life. It is becoming increasingly prevalent in children. While Type 1 diabetes is not preventable, Type 2 diabetes is. Risk factors include obesity, a high-fat and high-carb diet paired with a non-active lifestyle, and a family history of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can often be controlled by making changes in diet and lifestyle. Cutting down on carbohydrates and eating a balanced, healthy diet will help you maintain a healthy weight and improve your blood sugar levels. Exercise helps with weight issues and improves how the body's response to insulin.

The third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes. This occurs in pregnant women who were not previously diagnosed with diabetes. This often subsides after giving birth or post partum. Though it does not give the baby diabetes, it does put the woman at a higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
