How to Associate Files in Outlook Express

    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button on your Outlook Express computer. Click the "Computer" icon in the menu selection. A window opens with a list of drives. Click the "Tools" menu item, and select "Folder Options." This opens a configuration window.

    • 2). Click the "File Types" tab. This tab lists all of the file extensions recognized on your computer. Click the file extension you want to edit. For instance, if you want to associate the XLS file extension with Excel in Outlook Express, click the file extension in the list and click "Change."

    • 3). Double-click the EXE file used to open the program. For instance, double-click "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Excel.exe" to use Microsoft Excel for an XLS file extension.

    • 4). Click "OK" to save the executable file extension. Click "OK" again in the main menu to save the settings. Open Outlook Express, and double-click the file in your email message to verify the new settings.
