How to Set Up VNC in Linux
- 1). Click on "System" in the upper-left hand corner, then "Preferences," and "Remote Desktop." Type in your password if a dialog box appears.
- 2). Check the box that says "Allow other users to view your desktop" to enable remote desktop and VNC.
- 3). Set a password. Pick an especially difficult one since VNC creates a lot of security risks if left too open.
- 4). Optionally, set VNC to only allow local connections (from within your local network) or to allow global connections (the entire Internet). These options are located under the "Advanced" tab. For added security check the box before "You must confirm each access to this machine."
- 5). Connect to your new VNC server from another computer to test that Vino was set up properly. From another Ubuntu machine you can find a VNC client under the "Internet" portion of the "Applications" menu. For Windows or Mac OS X there are built-in clients or the free alternatives: TightVNC and RealVNC.
