Selecting a great style of bedding is a great way to update the decor of any bedroom. Southwestern bedding is a perfect way to capture the essence and bring it into the home. The history and culture of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Texas, California and Colorado infuse the home with the artistic traditions born in the region. Among these are Southwestern art and cuisine, both of which celebrate Southwestern heritage as an important element of American culture at large.

Even a tiny bit of the Southwest can add calm and coziness to a bedroom, making it feel more rustic and peaceful. Guests can dream of canyons, cattle, cowboys and the open range, even as they slumber in the heart of the big city. Amid the sense of seclusion and open spaces called to mind by the decor, they will trade crowded streets and fluorescent lights for a night filled with vast plains and starry skies.

It is easy to see why this genre has become such a popular way to decorate. Southwest style bedding is now available in virtually limitless varieties to spruce up any space. The only limiting factor is the imagination.

There are two steps to finding just the right combination of bedding. The first step is for the decorator to identify what about the Southwest is found to be inspiring. After that, all that is left is to combine colors and designs reminiscent of the image in the mind of the designer.

For example, a bedroom based on red-rock country and beautiful Sedona will combine red, orange and other tones tinged with brown, as well as irregular lines that mimic mountains in the desert. The national parks and monuments for which Utah is famous can make great bedding inspiration as well. The shapes of rock formations and hoodoos, like those found in Bryce Canyon National Park, for example, might inspire the use of interesting stitching patterns, and the same can be said of the archaeological ruins at Mesa Verde National Park. A Grand Canyon motif might evoke the sunset over the South Rim and the Colorado River rushing along in its depths.

New Mexico is a stark and beautiful land with more than enough material from which to draw ideas for bedding. Georgia OKeeffe and the Taos artist colony created paintings that sum up the Southwest and that are easily represented in a bedding theme. Chilies, brightly colored gourds and other colorful ingredients from Santa Fe cuisine are instantly recognizable icons of the Southwest.

The most authentic expressions of the Southwest are those that reflect the heritage of the numerous and diverse Native American people who occupied the region for many years before their first encounters with Europeans. The traditional art of the Hopi, Navajo, Havasupai, Zuni, Tarahumara, Pueblo and other native peoples is recognized throughout America and the entire world. Adding pieces with these elements to a bedroom set will instantly bring to mind the culture and experience of the first Americans.
