Glycemic Diet Index

Most people would love the sound of "regulating blood sugar levels.
" But you may not like the sound of trying to memorize or recall the glycemic diet index number of all the food you consume.
But if you are suffering from diabetes, then you might want to do it.
First and foremost, the glycemic diet index is not just the only indicator you should consider.
The nutritional content of the food is what really matters.
Take coffee for example.
You should know that coffee is essential to your diet, regardless of where it sits on the glycemic index scale.
Which means you cannot just focus on the numbers itself.
Replacing carrots with a diet coke because it has lower glycemic index does not mean it would make you any healthier.
Remember that the glycemic index does not actually change the ratio of fats, carbohydrates and proteins that you eat.
The ratio of these nutrients is determined based on the level of your activity.
Fortunately, most foods follow the same pattern based on the glycemic index scale.
Stuffs like candies which are plain sugary are high on the glycemic index.
Both fats and proteins are low.
Vegetables may be lower than fruits but this varies depending on the fiber and sugar ration.
For example, carrots and ripe bananas may be high on the glycemic diet index but these are healthy foods that do not have lots of calories and are not offensive on the overall diet scheme.
What you need to look out for are the starches as they are the big but not so obvious offenders.
We are all aware that most grains are being cooked before we can eat them, and this is what is causing their glycemic diet index to go up high.
When these foods are processed - like how it is done to make pastas and white rice - then you will have an off-the-chart numbers which are perfect to ruin your diet scheme.
Due to this, these foods should be limited, or in severe cases, eliminated or cut out completely.
On the other hand, most of us do not eat pasta alone and a combination of foods can provide equalizing effects.
Pasta which contains lots of meat and fat will not shock your system and is eating pasta alone.
And so if you are sure that you are having a well-balanced diet, then it will not be much of a concern at all.
If you are still having a hard time planning a good diet menu which is based on the glycemic diet index, then you may want to visit a nutritionist or a dietician for some advice.
This way you can be surer on the path you are taking when it comes to your diet schemes and following the glycemic diet index.
