Making Your Own Tablecloths
- 1). Measure your table, both width and length. Decide how much you want your tablecloth to hang down on the sides; this measurement is called the "drop." Add twice the drop and 2 inches for hems to the width of your table to determine how wide you need your fabric to be. Calculate the length you need your fabric to be in the same way.
- 2). Measure the width of your fabric. If it is not wide enough, add 1-1/2 inches to the width of your table (not including the drop or hems) and cut a piece of fabric this width and the length you calculated earlier (including drop and hems). This is the center section of your tablecloth.
- 3). Calculate the width of the side pieces of your table cloth by adding 1-1/2 inches to the desired drop. Cut two pieces of fabric this width and the length you calculated earlier.
- 4). Pin the sides of the tablecloth to the center of the tablecloth with the right sides together. Sew with a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Finish the seam by zigzag stitching both sides of the seam allowances on your sewing machine. Press these seams open.
- 5). Iron up a 1-inch hem on all edges of the tablecloth. Turn down the 1-inch hem by 1/2-inch and iron it down again. Fold the corners up at a right angle. Trim the corner and miter it by removing the overlapping fabric of the hems at the corners. Sew the hem close to the top folded edge.
