    • 1). Lay out your fabric on a clean surface and draw a rectangle that measures 22 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches. Draw the same size rectangle on a piece of lining fabric. Draw a rectangle that measures 22 inches by 8 inches on a piece of foam padding. Cut out each of the rectangles.

    • 2). Lay the fabric face up, layer the lining on top with the good side facing downward and center the padding on the lining. Sew along one long edge of the fabric and lining with a 1/4-inch seam allowance to join the layers. Do not sew through the padding.

    • 3). Flip the padding and lining over the sewn long edge to put the lining on the bottom and sandwich the padding in between. The sewn long edge is the top of the purse. Sew along the remaining long edge and the two short edges to seal the padding inside.

    • 4). Bring the short ends of the joined fabrics together, insert pins and sew along the short ends to make an oval shape.

    • 5). Lay the oval shape bottom side down on another piece of fabric. Trace around the outside of the oval to make the fabric for the bottom of the purse. Tracing along the outside of the oval provides the extra fabric for the seam allowance.

    • 6). Cut out the oval. Use it to make one more identical fabric oval for the top of the purse. Cut out two pieces of lining fabric and two pieces of padding to the same size. Trim around the outer edges of one of the ovals when you are done to reduce the padding oval by about 1/2 inch. This is the oval for the bottom of the bag.

    • 7). Assemble the top and bottom of the purse. Lay the two fabric ovals side by side on the work surface, with the good sides facing upward. Lay one lining oval face down on top of each piece of fabric. Sew around each of the layered ovals to join. Leave a 4-inch gap in the center of one long edge on each oval.

    • 8). Invert the fabric through the gap and insert the oval padding shapes through the gaps, keeping track of the trimmed padding to make the bottom of the purse.

    • 9). Turn the edges of the gap inward on the bottom oval and sew the seam closed. Slide the oval into the bottom of the purse, pin it in place and sew all the way around to connect the bottom. Double back over the stitches for extra reinforcement.

Lay the remaining oval on top of the purse, with all of the edges aligned. Pin the loose fabric at the gap in the oval to the top edge of the purse. Sew the gap closed by sewing it to the purse. Leave the oval top of the purse lifted so you can work inside the purse.

Measure the circumference of the oval, not including the 4-inch gap that is now sewn to the purse. Slide a zipper of this length around the top, inside edge of the purse and pin it in place. Pin the other side of the zipper around the outer edge of the oval’s underside. Sew the zipper in place with the teeth facing outward.

Cut a piece of canvas strapping to a length of about 28 inches. Fold the rough edges under and pin the ends to the short ends of the purse. Sew the ends in place.
