Songs of American Idol Season 10 - Audition #6

106 3
One would think that Los Angeles would be a hotbed of talent for American Idol to tap during auditions, but if the singers featured on the sixth audition episode of season ten are any indication, the show may have reached the bottom of the barrel. Only five singers received golden tickets to Hollywood week over the course of an hour, which is highly unusual for the show. Here are the songs that helped those five vocalists move to the next round of American Idol.

1. "She Will Be Loved" - Original by Maroon 5, sung by Tim Halperin

Maroon 5 showed up twice during week three of auditions, with "Sunday Morning" used in Austin, and "She Will Be Loved" performed in Los Angeles by Tim Halperin. Tim's good-but-not-great version divided the judges, but it was good enough to give him a second shot during Hollywood week. "She Will Be Loved" became Maroon 5's second top 5 hit in the United States while cementing them as a pop force to be reckoned with worldwide. The best known version of "She Will Be Loved" from American Idol is Blake Lewis's, which he performed during the finals of season six.

2. "You Give Good Love" - Original by Whitney Houston, sung by Karen Rodriguez

Season 10 of American Idol is the first season that producers allowed potential contestants to submit auditions via MySpace, but from the lack of attention paid to those contestants during the Los Angeles auditions, it may also be the last season to utilize that option. The one auditioner featured from the MySpace performances was Karen Rodriguez, who absolutely blew away everyone else in Los Angeles with her original take on Whitney Houston's "You Give Good Love." Released in 1986, "You Give Good Love" became Whitney Houston's first solo hit, reaching #3 on the Pop chart and #1 on the R&B chart.

3. "Superwoman" - Original by Alicia Keys, sung by Heidi Kzham

An audition opening with a belly dancer is not normally a precursor to a good audition, but the Los Angeles auditions were not the typical episode of American Idol. Heidi Kzham's version of "Superwoman" wasn't outstanding, but the guys on the judging panel were swayed enough to put her through to Hollywood week. Alicia Keys released "Superwoman" as the fourth single from her As I Am CD, but it became her lowest charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 when it peaked at #82.

4. "Lean On Me" - Original by Bill Withers, sung by Mark and Aaron Gutierrez

The final audition of the episode featured brothers Mark and Aaron Gutierrez singing the classic Bill Withers song "Lean On Me." There were few highlights of the Los Angeles auditions to compare their duet to, but their harmonies stood out in an episode lacking in true talent. Bill Withers's original topped the Pop and R&B charts in 1972, while a cover version by Club Nouveau also climbed to #1 in 1987. Didi Benami performed "Lean On Me" during Top 20 week in season 9 of American Idol.
