How to Convert a Cat5 to a Cross-Over Cable
- 1). Cut the plastic RJ-45 connector off one end of the networking cable. Save the connector for later use.
- 2). Strip a portion of the outer Cat5 insulation away from the internal wires--1/2 inch is the standard strip length.
- 3). Fan the wires out so they are flat and adjacent to one another.
- 4). Arrange the wires so that they are in the same order as they were within the RJ-45 connector that was just cut off. Use the see-through plastic connector as reference for the required order.
- 5). Switch the location of the orange and green wires.
- 6). Insert the wires into a new RJ-45 connector so that each wire is within its own slot.
- 7). Insert the cable and RJ-45 connector into the crimping tool and squeeze the handles until no further clicking noises are heard.
- 8). Lightly pull on the Cat5 cable to remove it from the crimping tool. This cable is now a crossover cable and may be used in any installation that requires a physical data cross.
