Makeup Tips for Dark Skin

    Liquid Foundation

    • Foundation colors for dark skin can be difficult to find. Try to find samples that you can experiment with to find your match. Sometimes the best match may be a combination of two colors. You may need different colors for different parts of your face, depending on pigmentation and sun exposure.

To start, clean, tone and moisturize skin before applying foundation. Let the moisturizer sink in for a few minutes before you apply the foundation. Find a foundation shade that matches your skin tone. Dab the foundation on your skin, starting at the forehead and moving to the nose, cheeks, chin and eyelids. Blend evenly with your fingers, a cosmetic sponge or a foundation brush. Set the foundation with a matte face powder.

    Concealer

    • Dark skinned women, like most women, may find concealer to be an important part of their makeup regimen. Choose a shade slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Lighter concealer is especially important for use around the eyes to cover dark circles. Use your ring finger, an applicator sponge or a foundation brush to apply the concealer. Lightly press the concealer into the skin and blend well. Use concealer on the lids of your eyes to cover any discoloration. It will also serve as a good base for eye makeup.

    Blush

    • Apply blush over foundation and powder. Darker skin tones look best with deeper colors, like reds and wines. Smile, then use a medium-sized brush to sweep color over the apples of your cheeks. Use a bronzer wherever the sun hits your face naturally.

    Eye Makeup

    • Women with dark skin can use more dramatic colors on their eyes. Some good options are golds, purples and bronzes. Use a lighter, shimmery color over the entire eyelid, then use a darker shade to accent the crease of the eye. An even lighter tone than the base eyeshadow can be used to highlight under the brow line. To line eyes, use either an eyeliner pencil or an eyeliner brush. Add more drama with color.

    Lips

    • If you have gone with a more dramatic eye, opt for a more natural lip and vice-versa. Often a sheer or slightly tinted lip gloss is all you need for a polished look. Again, women with darker skin tones can get away with more vibrant colors, so choose from cherries, amethysts and corals for bright, luscious lips.
