How to Restore Boot Files in an MP3 Player

    Apple iPod

    • 1). Open the iTunes application and connect the iPod to your computer using the included iPod USB cable. If you do not have iTunes installed, download the application and double-click the downloaded file to start the installer.

    • 2). Highlight the iPod, listed in iTune's "Devices." Open the "Summary" tab.

    • 3). Click "Restore." A warning will pop up, notifying you that all the media will be erased from the iPod during the restoration process. If you have not backed up the iPod recently, iTunes will give you the option to back up the device first, click "Back Up" if this is the case. If not, click "Restore" to confirm. The restoration files are downloaded via iTunes and applied to your iPod.

    SanDisk Sansa

    • 1). Download and install the Sansa Device Recovery Tool. See Resources.

    • 2). Hold down the "Power" button on the Sansa MP3 player for 8 seconds to turn the device off.

    • 3). Hold down the "Right" button and the "Volume Up" botton. Press and release the "Power" button. Wait a few seconds, continue to hold the "Right" and "Volume Up" buttons. The screen will display "Recovery Needed."

    • 4). Connect the Sansa MP3 player to your computer using a USB cable.

    • 5). Select "Recover Sansa Device" from the dialog window that appears. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the firmware to the device.

    Microsoft Zune

    • 1). Download and install the Zune software if it is not installed already.

    • 2). Unlock the "Hold" switch. Press and hold the "Back" button and "Up" on the directional Zune pad. Let go of the buttons when the device powers on.

    • 3). Press and hold "Back," "Play/Pause" and the center of the directional Zune pad. If you have a 30GB Zune model, press "Back," the center of the directional Zune pad and "Left" on the directional Zune pad. Hold the buttons until "Please Wait" appears on screen.

    • 4). Connect the Zune to the computer when "Connect Zune to your PC" appears on screen.

    • 5). Open the Zune software. The application will detect the device in recovery mode. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the device's firmware.
