SSI Benefits for Kids

104 3
    • SSI benefits are obtainable for families of low-income children that meet the disability criteria for Social Security. Some disabilities qualify immediately for benefits and are awarded immediately while waiting for a decision based on the application. Most SSI recipients will also receive subsidized medical care.

    Definition of Disability

    • A guideline to go by when demonstrating disability is having a diagnosis but also proving the disability severely affects the child's ability to function. The condition must be expected to last at least one year. Certain disabilities qualify for benefits right away such as HIV, blindness, deafness, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and certain cases of premature birth.

    Qualification

    • In order to receive SSI benefits, you have to qualify by being considered low-income. All income and assets are counted in determining eligibility for SSI. Certain types of income are not counted, such as tax refunds, loans, food stamps and other qualified exemptions.

    Application Process

    • An application for SSI can be filled out online but is best done in person. You will have an appointment scheduled to provide income and address documentation and to discuss your application. This will be scheduled so you can meet with a Social Security representative after your initial application whether you filed in person or online. You will also need to bring medical records to provide at your return appointment or wait for the Social Security Administration to make appointments with its own doctors to have one assess your child's conditions. The application process usually takes several months; depending on which state you live in, it can take less or more time.

    Appeal

    • If you were denied benefits and you would like to challenge the decision by appeal, you must do so in writing within 60 days. Legal Aid and similar low-income legal providers often offer free assistance with filing an SSI appeal. If the decision is in your favor after an appeal, you will receive benefits from the date you applied.
