Beruwala is small seaside resort in Sri Lanka that is located towards its Southwestern coast.
The town is popular among locals and tourists for its close proximity to the capital Colombo which makes for a convenient weekend seaside getaway.
The demographics of this town are predominantly Moor and, according to historical sources, this is one of the first Muslim settlements on the island.
It is said that Arab traders set up a village here in the 8th century AD and even today their descendents make up the majority of the area's residents.
Sri Lanka's oldest mosque, known as the Msjid-ul-Abrar, is one of the historical landmarks in the region.
Today, however, travelers come to this part of Sri Lanka in search of its golden sandy beaches of which there are plenty.
